Beloved Husband, Father & Grandfather

Obituary

Ger-Fei Tang, beloved husband of Ming-Ying (Shao) Tang, passed away at his Westford residence surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 5, 2020. He was 87.

Born in Guilin, China on August 19, 1932, he was a son of the late Jien-An Tang and Ru-Jen Chou Tang.

Ger-Fei lived in Taiwan and left in 1962 to attend graduate school in the United States. He lived in San Francisco before attending Hunter College in New York City, where he received a master's degree in mathematics. Later, Ger-Fei wrote a novel based on his time in San Francisco and his studies in New York.

Ger-Fei was introduced to Ming-Ying by a family friend. They were pen pals while he was in New York and she in Taiwan. They were married in Taiwan on December 31, 1967 and just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.

Ger-Fei and Ming-Ying moved to New Jersey and then Massachusetts, living for the past 43 years in Westford. Ger-Fei worked as a software engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation for many years.

He remained close with many of his college friends and they would visit with one another in various parts of the country during the summer. An avid Boston sports fan, a passion he passed on to his daughters, Ger-Fei looked forward to Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox games.

Ger-Fei loved to visit Atlantic City and Foxwoods Resort where he would sometimes meet his friends.

A wonderful and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by his family.

Surviving him besides his wife Ming-Ying are his daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Brent Mathena of Island Lake, IL and Scarlet Tang and Michael Maudlin of Bellingham, WA; a grandson, Evan Maudlin; a sister, S.R. Liang of Walnut, CA; sisters-in-law Ming-Lian Hsueh of West Covina, CA and Wendy Shao of Monterey Park, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Ger-Fei will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech at clarkeschools.org.
